Trash Away Services at Charlestown Community

Trash Away, Inc. provides services to The Charlestown Community two times per week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.  We will collect all solid household waste, yard waste and recyclable materials, such as newspapers, plastic, glass and metal food containers.  Trash is collected on both of these days, whereas recyclable materials are collected only on Tuesdays.

You must call our offices at (703) 838-9010 and arrange special pickup for larger items that can not be included in our regular trash compacting trucks. Larger items such as furniture, household appliances and bed frames will not only damage a regular trash truck but may also require special handling before disposal or recycling.  Household hazardous waste is also disposed of separately and will not be accepted by our collectors.  Household hazardous waste is defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as hazardous material such as household cleaners, paint, paint thinners, motor oil gasoline and pesticides. Please refer to the EPA website for more details at www.epa.gov/reg5rcra/wptdiv/p2pages/hhw.pdf.

We ask and urge our clients to recycle, not only because it is the law in Fairfax County but we are very environmentally aware and concerned at Trash Away.  We abide by all the laws and regulations of Fairfax County when providing recycling service. We ask that paper be separated from other recyclables in a brown paper bag or placed loosely in the recycle bins. Paper is recycled differently than other commingled recyclables (glass, metal and plastic materials) and recycling facilities will not accept paper if it is mixed with solid waste or other recyclable materials. Cardboard boxes will also be accepted as recyclable paper as long as it is broken down, otherwise Fairfax County allows us to consider it as trash. Also, other recyclable items such as glass, metal and plastic containers need to be thoroughly cleaned and placed in a clear plastic bag or placed loosely in the recycle bin provided to you.  Items that are not cleaned properly are considered contaminated and will be disposed of as solid waste.  This is the reason that food containers such as pizza boxes and paper plates are not accepted as recyclable material.  For more information on recycling, please visit the Fairfax County website at www.fairfaxcounty.ogv/living/recycling.

Since the rules for recycling are so strict and unique we have to arrange for different trucks to collect these items.   On Tuesday we have three trucks that come to your community.  One truck is used for trash pickup, one for newspaper/paper and one for commingled recyclables (glass, metal and plastic). The order of these three collections may differ based on the schedule of our drivers and the availability of the trucks.

We are very happy to serve the residents of Charlestown and we look forward to working with you not only as your trash hauler but also as partners to make your community and our environment a safer and better place to live.  Please do not hesitate to contact us at (703) 838-9010 at any time with any questions or concerns and we will be happy to assist you.

Sincerely,

Meena S. Hanifi, CPA
